You Can Be Anything You Want To Be
I was on my walk this morning when something worth blogging about happened. One of the many things I have learned enduring this COVID19 pandemic is that working remotely is not only doable but distance from one’s work really doesn’t matter.
While Capture Technologies, Inc is in Citrus Heights, California I am in Pismo Beach, California and start each day, at sunrise, with a walk on the beach. This morning as I was passing under the pier I was approached by an obviously drunk and homeless man with an almost empty bottle of vodka in one hand. The surf was close, and I quickly moved right to avoid an incoming wave and the oncoming man. He saw what I did and obviously realized I am an old man. He pointed at me and shouted out “nice move and keep active you can be anything you want to be”! That not only made me smile it jogged my memory of another story worth relating.
Way back in the late 1980s when Capture Technologies, Inc was USAudio, Inc., with an office in San Francisco, the founder, William Scott had parked his car and was walking to his office. Close to his office and on nearby corner he was approached by a young man begging for a dollar. Mr. Scott, stopped, reached into his pocket and pulled out a business card, and said “young man I won’t give you a penny but if you want to work, come see me” and walked away. Two days later the young man showed up in the office and asked for Mr. Scott. Bill Scott being a man of his word put the young man to work in inventory and shipping. That young man, Joe, worked his up the ladder and over the years became the General Manager.
My point is threefold; yes, with hard work, a positive attitude, and a little luck you can become anything you want to be. You can also overcome and change where you do NOT want to be, with hard work, a positive attitude and the will to succeed. And thirdly, and maybe most importantly, we are put on this planet for a reason and one of those reasons just might be giving others a hand up.
