More Advice on Advice
A few days ago, I was talking to one of Capture’s Board Members and he mentioned something about not taking his advice. I can’t remember what advice I didn’t take but it did jar my memory about giving and taking advice.
The classic definition of advice is “guidance or recommendations with regard to prudent future action.” Knowing that is important, however, IMO what is more important is knowing when to apply advice to the given situation.
In my fifty plus years running small business there have been countless decisions and many, many times I have sought advice from professionals, friends, acquaintances and even occasionally from total strangers.
Advice, to me, is another piece of the puzzle and it is the seekers job to decide if the advice fits and helps complete the puzzle.
I do believe seeking advice is important and gives one another perspective into the problem at hand. More importantly is how often to you take the advice you are seeking. If it is never, why bother wasting your time and theirs. If it is always bells should be going off in your head.
When you do seek advice and get good solid, informative, and helpful assistance in solving the problem always give credit where credit is due and let your thanks be known.
We were put on this planet for a reason and giving advice to help others just might be one of those reasons.
