South L.A. residents have been asking for new surveillance cameras for a long time. After a teenager was shot at a local park last week, it looks like officials are beginning to take their needs seriously. Five cameras will be installed at the Jackie Tatum/Harvard Park Recreation Center as a result of the fatal shooting. Investigators are still looking for more information in order to find the person responsible, but new security equipment will be installed to help the residents to feel safer.
$8 million of improvements are going into the park to make it more family friendly. According to NBC Los Angeles, the park recently received funding for a swimming pool, skate park and refurbished playing fields, but the surveillance cameras had been cut from the budget.
Now, the surveillance cameras will be both bulletproof and tamper proof. It will take months before the cameras will go in, but residents agree that they will be well worth the wait. Officials and residents have said that the cameras will be an excellent crime deterrent.
