Everyone knows that the social media is great for sharing things with friends. Now, we’re finding out that it’s great for sharing all kinds of things with people, including crime photos and videos. Police departments all over the country are trying it, and finding out that it can be a very useful tool for solving crimes.
According to Security Info Watch, there are nearly 40 police departments that are currently using social media to share surveillance videos. Kansas City, Milwaukee, Detroit, Baltimore, Houston, Tucson, Portland and Philadelphia are just the beginning of the list.
Milwaukee’s Police Department has been using social media for quite some time. Currently, they are on Facebook and Twitter to keep an open dialogue with the public. By doing so, they’ve cultivated a strong following. Anne Schwartz, director of communications for the department has said that overall, social media has been a very positive addition for them. In the past, they’ve even solved crimes specifically because of social media. With the surveillance videos so readily accessible on their social media outlets, citizens can watch and pause to see if they can recognize a suspect.
The same thing is happening at the Philadelphia Police Department as well. They have been sharing YouTube videos of unsolved crimes, which include robberies, assaults, abductions and more. Of their 250 videos that were released, 90 arrests were made.
Both Milwaukee and Philadelphia are very strategic about their video sharing as well. For example, they are very careful to blur other faces in the videos out. This way, viewers will only see the targeted individual. They also disable comments on the videos so that each viewer can watch with an open mind.
All of the videos that they use come directly from public surveillance cameras. Typically, they gather their videos from outdoor cameras or businesses that have the cameras installed. Security cameras that have day and night vision as well as a HD resolution can be especially helpful for image quality.
Social media can be used for all types of purposes. While most of us use it just for fun, so many people can use it to do great things. With more that 800 million unique users watching YouTube every day, you never know who you might reach.
