As college life becomes more complex, many campus administrators are stepping up their game in the area of access control in order to increase safety for their students. Additional side benefits of integrating an access control system on campus include greater student tracking, online registration, and decreased administrative attention
The traditional key entry system for college students is problematic for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the difficulty surrounding a lost key. It’s not cost effective or feasible to change the locks on an entire dormitory when one student loses his or her key. With keyless entry, as a part of a larger access control solution, resolving a lost key dilemma is as simple as deactivating the lost card, and reissuing a new smart card for the student to use immediately.
An even bigger issue is that of the lack of security around keys and standard Prox cards. Students lose their keys and cards all the time. Both keys and standard Prox cards are extremely easy to duplicate thus compromising student security. Schools looking to beef up security are moving to implementing card technologies that are more secure than Prox cards that have been hacked or keys which can be duplicated.
The Executive Director of the Identification Systems Group, Tom Stiles, wrote an excellent blog on the benefits of an improved access control system for college dormitories and residence communities. Mr Stiles references the success story at Ole Miss which can easily be applied at many of the colleges and universities in the San Francisco Bay Area. With more than a dozen four year private and public universities within a 40 mile radius of San Francisco, the tech savvy area is a fertile ground for this type of access control solution.
The Academy of Art University is a unique case study, mirroring the changing world with a diverse campus spread over a large portion of downtown San Francisco. Numbering more than three dozen and covering wide swaths of the city, the campus is a prime candidate for such an access control solution.
